www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday June 22, 2007 - 23 The original wellness organization The YMCA of Oakville's 50th anniversary Annual General Meeting was a night of celebration for the Oakville Y with special guest Michael Weil, president and CEO of YMCA Canada. Weil spoke of his experience with the YMCA and the organization's long history in Canada. "Since their inception, YMCAs in Canada have taken a positive approach to the way they build healthy children, healthy families and healthy communities," he said. "The YMCA has over 150 years of experience providing children, youth, families and adults with opportunities for service, intergenerational relationships and community support by focusing on the development of total health in spirit, mind and body. In a way, we are the original "wellness" organization." The YMCA in Canada currently serves 1.8 million people, of which 700,000 are children and youth. Together, there are 48 YMCAs and nine YMCA-YWCAs that form a national federation, YMCA Canada, and have a presence in 250 cities and towns in every province of Canada. Nearly 24,000 Canadians volunteer for the YMCA annually, contributing more than one million hours of their time. Weil also commented on the health and social issues facing Canadians today, including: · Among 29 OECD nations, Canada ranks 21st in infant mortality, · The percent age of overweight children in Canada has tripled in a genera- tion, · 15 per cent of all children and youth are affected by problems such as anxiety, attention deficit disorder, depression, addiction and other mental disorders, · 25 per cent of Grade 7 students spend their after-school time alone, · 778,000 Canadian children live in low-income families. "So how does the YMCA in Canada address many of these health determinants?" Weil said "The Y plays an important role in Canada on building healthier Canadians and communities by working with individuals, families, and communities through a broad range of programs and services. Fundamental to the YMCA's approach is the involvement of partners. These partners include municipalities and other levels of government, health authorities and hospitals, school boards, and other community organizations and agencies. And the work of the YMCA could not be accomplished without its volunteers." In closing, Weil said, "The Y is a gateway to health in a community." -- Submitted by the Oakville YMCA.
