Hartnett is a talented singer, competitive swimmer and avid volunteer. As a blind person, she has had to overcome a number of challenges that would have deterred or discouraged most people. The barriers that Hartnett has encountered have alerted her to the need for greater public understanding of the needs and potential of the disabled. Since the age of eight, she has been in the public eye, appearing in newspapers and acting as a keynote speaker at various venues. Hartnett leads by example, showing people that no challenge is too great and human potential is boundless. She became the first blind legislative page, a daunting task that she approached with her usual confidence and creativity. The publicity she received as a result of her job helped spread her message throughout the country and since her appearance on an American talk show, throughout the world. Hartnett was also invited by Appleby College, one of Canada's most academically rigorous schools, to be its first blind student. She accepted and has currently secured herself a place at the top of her class. Mitchell has a remarkable talent for raising money. Through various charitable endeavours, he has raised impressive sums for worthwhile causes. His concern for the atrocities taking place in Darfur, Sudan, prompted him to undertake an initiative called Fighting for Justice in Sudan.
