He also lived in Ottawa for three years where he founded a new community of priests called the Companions of the Cross and then went on to work provincially, nationally and internationally with the Charismatic Renewal movement -- a driving force in Coughlin's spiritual life. It was in 2001 that Coughlin said Bishop Anthony Tonnos of the Hamilton Diocese called upon him to head up a parish again -- at St. Andrew's. Coughlin remains, however, very involved in the Charismatic Renewal movement. In fact, he has credited the movement for reaffirming his calling at a time when many other priests were doubting theirs. In the late 1960s, priests were abandoning the Church in droves and Coughlin was feeling the pressure. "I never had a doubt about my priesthood, but it was a confusing time," he said. In 1971, Coughlin got involved with the movement and is today its national chair in Canada. He has penned six books with titles like The Fire Within, He's Alive and Explosion of Fire. He's also editor of the Bread of Life magazine. Coughlin is a national and international speaker, a Canadian expert on the movement, who will speak this summer in Hawaii, in Ireland next October and will open a Toronto conference next week. According to Coughlin, the movement is "the stirring up of baptismal graces." Coughlin said that while the Second Vatican Council may be viewed as a renewal of the form and structure of the Church, Charismatic Renewal is the renewal of the heart within the church. "It's a prayer renewal in the church," he said. Since embracing charismatic renewal, Coughlin said he was filled with enthusiasm for the Holy Spirit and "that has continued all these years." At age 65, Coughlin has another decade to go before retirement. He is Past Director of Service for the Catholic Charismatic Renewal Services of Ontario (CCRSO); Past Ontario Bishops' Liaison to the Catholic Charismatic Renewal; a member of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal Services of Canada (CCRSO) ­ (Anglophone); Executive Director of the Bread of Life Renewal Centre and a Tour Director for Pilgrimages to Rome, Assisi, Medjugorje, and the Holy Land. While time demands may preclude his aspirations, Coughlin said he has always wanted to establish a new order of nuns, older women, which he would call the Sisters of St. John -- named after a place his mother lived in Hamilton during her life and after the women reported in the Bible to be present at the Crucifixion. Coughlin, however, remains busy with the challenges of a parish in the modern world -- the challenge of getting his approximate 4-5,000-member parish to attend masses and to maintain their spiritual lives. As always, there have been times over his 40-plus years as a cleric that Coughlin has met challenges -- but whether it be with family support, determination or charismatic renewal, he has met and overcome them. "I always wanted to be a good confessor and a good preacher," he said, noting his priesthood began on a very rough note when, during his first sermon to his peers in the seminary, "The critique was `It was like wandering with Moses in the desert for 40 years.'
