Vol. 46 No. 82 More ice pads on the horizon Report recommends four more surfaces, but mayor maintains six are needed By Kim Arnott SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER Oakville could be an awfully slippery place by the time the next municipal election slides around. According to the Town's official projections, Oakville will need 2.4 new ice surfaces by 2011. Town staff is suggesting it would be more cost efficient to build four pads, rather than simply the two slated for the soon-to-be developed North Park. But Mayor Rob Burton is reiterating his election promise of building six new ice surfaces before his four years in office end. "I hope to be able to complete my term and tell people that I promised six and I delivered six," he says. "And if everything breaks the right way, we will." A report presented to the town's Community Service committee on Monday night says the town has addressed the issue of ice time shortages with its purchase of the former Twin Rinks arena. For the coming winter season, all youth ice user groups are expected to receive all the prime time ice they need. However, planning is underway for additional surfaces at North Park and town staff will be looking into the possibility of building a $30 to $32 million four-pad arena, possibly in conjunction with a private sector partner. Details on how a partnership might work will be brought back to town councillors in September, after staff has a chance to investigate other recreation facility partnerships in Inside Living ..............................11 Automotive ....................16 Artscene...........................21 Sports...............................24 Classified ........................26 Full Delivery: McMaster Partial Delivery: Ashley Furniture, West of the City, Sport Mart, Giant Carpet, XS Cargo, Oakville Kia, City Parent, James Boyd, Service for Youths, Staples, Stoney Creek Furniture, Topper"s Pizza, Henry's Camera, Home Depot DUNDEE MORTGAGE SERVICES INC. I arrived with the St. Lucia Learning Project volunteers on Sunday afternoon, and we spent most of our time getting ready for Monday afternoon's workshops and the start of the children's workshops on Tuesday. Oakville resident Michelle Anderson, executive director of the St. Lucia Learning Project, and Jean Brown arrived a week earlier to introduce the program to two new schools, Bouton Combined School and Soufriere Infant School. They were very optimistic about their encounters. Oakville Beaver photojournalist Sabrina Byrnes is in St. Lucia as part of a volunteer program -- the St. Lucia Learning Project -- dedicated to improving the education of young children in remote villages of St. Lucia. The program is run by a team of teachers associated with Oakville's Chartwell Baptist Church. During her two-week stay, she will be filing reports to The Oakville Beaver and posting updates on oakvillebeaver.com. Anderson was pleased with Bouton and praised the teachers.
