The Strikers defeated the Kitchener Spirit 1-0 to win the Burlington Select Soccer Tournament. Cassi Ellis was named the MVP of the final while teammate Lauren Rzepecki took tournament MVP honours. Goalkeepers Holly Miller and Rachel Bright combined to record four shutouts in five games as the Strikers defeated St. Catharines, Kitchener and the Burlington Phantoms. Oakville then edged the Burlington Force in a shootout. Hailey Francis, Mikaela Lowe, Lydia Gibson and Bright earned game MVP honours. Other team members are Maddie MacDonald, Rachel Worton, Jasmine Zanussi, Morgan Caissie, Taylor Wade, Alyssa Miocevich, Haley Hutchinson, Jess Purvis, Courtney Clarke, Dana Seagrove, Sarah MacDowell, Mannie Montelpare, Caroline O'Brien and Bethany Greer. Joe Miocevich and Mark Worton coach the team. STRIKING: Players on the Oakville Strikers under-12 girls' soccer team have had plenty to smile about lately. The team recently won its second consecutive tournament, claiming gold at the Burlington Select Soccer Tournament, and extended its unbeaten streak to 18 games. Local girls help Chiefs to lacrosse gold Madison Faion, Isabella Triolo and Ashley van Kralingen of Oakville helped the Burlington Chiefs peewee girls' lacrosse team win a gold medal at the Bill Buckly Summer Classic Lacrosse Tournament in Hamilton. The Chiefs defeated the Hamilton Bengals in the championship game. The Bengals handed Burlington its only loss of the tournament in the opening game. However, the Chiefs bounced back with decisive victories over Peterborough, Niagara-On-TheLake and Elora to earn a rematch in the final. The final was the latest chapter in the rivalry between the teams, who met in last year's provincial championships, with the Bengals claiming the gold medal. The defence also turned in a strong game, led by defensive lineman Steve Falconi who recovered two fumbles and Brittain solid at FIBA U19 Oakville's Scott Brittain had six points, four rebounds, two assists, two steals and a blocked shot in 17 minutes of playing time in Canada's 99-83 victory over Korea at the FIBA World Under-19 Basketball Championships. Canada opened the tournament with an 82-60 win over Nigeria before losing three straight, 81-58 to Turkey, 81-70 to Australia and 83-69 to Spain. Brittain, an Iroquois Ridge graduate who now plays for Boston University, led the team with eight rebounds against Spain. He played 28 minutes, scoring six points.
