Perhaps, this is a situation in which we need to think outside the box, just as the creators of this naturalization project did, in order to come up with new solutions to our community's growth problems. Think of the dollars wasted, not just on this project, but the cost of dismantling the garden and then erecting portables on the site when there are empty classrooms in other schools in the area. Why didn't they consult with members of the community on how we might better handle this problem? Members of the community built this project and I'm sure we could have also come up with another viable, more cost-effective solution if we were given an opportunity. There just had to be a better way of handling the situation than bulldozing the school's natural environmental legacy. JANE BROOKS Conservation Halton (CH) is slated to receive some provincial funds for an initiative that aims to improve local residents' health and the environment at the same time. The Province announced Tuesday that CH will get a $39,390 grant from the 2007-08 Communities in Action Fund (CIAF) to help produce a trail guide and launch the Footsteps Challenges, a communitywide walking campaign. "We are very excited that we will now be able to publish the Halton Hikes trail guide book, which will feature 50 of the best hiking trails in Halton and a pedometer to allow people to track their footsteps," said Gary Hutton, CH director of communications. "When hikers reach a certain number of steps, Conservation Halton will plant trees to enhance the environment," said Hutton. "We expect 15,000 people will participate in the program and become more active and help the environment at the same time," Hutton added. The CIAF, now in its fourth year, is a $5-million program that has awarded more than $23 million to over 700 organizations at the local and provincial levels and has already benefited about one million people. "CIAF grants are making it easier for residents in this community to become more active," said VaughanKing-Aurora MPP Greg Sorbara, who made the funding announcement on behalf of Minister of Health Jim Watson. "These grants will provide new and enhanced sport, recreation and physical programs that will improve the health and fitness of local families," said Sorbara.
