Ming Manktelow, Paulomi Patel, Alex Llabres, Megan Hadubiak, Bernie Hemmers, Shawna Balazs, Yamuna Muruganandan and Andrew Phillips each earned their first degree black belt, with Brian Charbine, Louie Mendez, Antony Mendez, Cathy Hadubiak, Dave Hadubiak, Kevin Tratt and Matthew Cudmore achieving second degree black belt status. A first degree black belt requires a minimum of four years of training, while a second degree requires at least six years. Attaining a black belt involves much more than simply the time prerequisite, however. The test itself is broken into two parts, theoretical and physical. The theoretical component comes in the form of a written test, designed to challenge the students' knowledge of such topics as Taekwon-Do history, fundamental movements, pattern basics and Korean terminology. A miminum grade of 70 per cent is required in order to pass the exam. The physical portion is very demanding, often lasting in excess of five hours. It tests physical conditioning, fundamental movements, patterns, self-defence, sparring and breaking. Students are required to perform all the techniques learnt from their very first day as a white belt up to the black belt test day. The final component of the physical test, breaking, includes a myriad of techniques, such as power breaks, speed breaking and flying techniques. It concludes with perhaps the most daunting challenge, the breaking of a cement brick. Students testing for higher degrees can expect to break more than one brick at a time. Due to the strict requirements, Morningstar holds black belt testing no more than twice a year. Sometimes, a full year will pass before another group of candidates is ready. Because of their irregularity, such tests are considered special events at Morningstar Taekwon-Do. Johnny Danielson tossed a complete game against Jamestown, and Daniel Simone pounded two home runs against Connie Mack. Darichuk added a deep fly for the Major All-Stars versus Connie Mack, and Brooks and Cangemi teamed for the shutout. The semifinal saw Oakville blast Cayuga Little League 12-1. Simone blasted his third home run of the tournament and the Brooks/Cangemi tandem was effective again, yielding only four hits. Also contributing to the Major All-Stars' successes this season were Gavin McLaughlin and Erec Kingston. Mario Congemi and Franco Simone also coach the club.
