But its organizer says there's a serious purpose to the fundraiser slated for Burlington's waterfront on Saturday, Aug. 25 - projects to help Guatemalans. CCARE president and founder Hilda Rossi, of Oakville, is appealing to local residents to think beyond Canada's border and help the Central American country. "How can we care just about people here?" she said. "We have to care for everyone." Rossi said a focus was required, so CCARE projects are geared towards helping communities in Guatemala's Merendon Mountains and surrounding areas. Projects have included construction of a multi-skill centre, a community centre/health clinic and a community store, as well as developing life skills, health and education. She said Halton residents previously contributed $10,000 to the event, but corporate donations have been very minimal. Located near the Honduran border, the Merendon Mountains were hard-hit by Hurricane Mitch in 1998. That disaster prompted Rossi and others to organ- ize the Halton-Peel Central American Relief Effort. She later formed CCARE in 2003 and two years later, Hurricane Stan caused major damage in Mexico and Guatemala as well as other Central American countries. Rossi has lived in Canada for 44 years, but is a Guatemala native. The CCARE group has organized annual missions to Guatemala, with all participants volunteering their time and paying their own way. Another mission is planned for next spring. She noted the Mayan Chorti who live in the Merendon Mountains have received minimal aid from other sources and endure dreadful living conditions. There is no water or hydro and education is very poor, said Rossi. The upcoming fundraiser is called the 5K Run Walk for the Children of Merendon Mountains. Participants will meet at the Spencer Smith Park Gazebo and the event will be held along the waterfront trail that extends to the Burlington Beach Strip. There will also be a one-kilometre children's and adults' fun walk. Registration starts 8 a.m. and the run/walk begins one hour later.
