26 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday August 31, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Economies of good and evil at Centennial Square Toronto artist Mitch Robertson's exhibition, 5,6,7: Economies of Good and Evil is the next show to hit Oakville Galleries at Centennial Square, from Sept. 8-Nov. 4. The exhibition investigates the church and capitalism, as the artist ponders Christianity's "corporate makeover" in a series of multiples, rubbings, paintings, photographs and more. Robertson's interest is in the faithbased appeal of industries surrounding celebrity, tourism and myth. The artist finds links between advertising and iconography, and questions the contemporary meaning of good and evil. Robertson translates sacred claims into basic, human questions, not from the perspective of a religious scholar, but as a curious bystander. With subtle interventions and satirical mass-production, he surveys sensitive territory. A native of Woodstock, Ontario, Robertson studied at York University and graduated from the Toronto School of Art in 1997. He currently lives and works in Toronto. He has shown across Canada and New Zealand, as well as in the United States, Switzerland, Northern Ireland, England, Germany, Scotland and Australia. His work is in numerous public, corporate and private art collections nationally and internationally. 5,6,7: Economies of Good and Evil is organized by Plug in ICA, Winnipeg and Oakville Galleries. The exhibition is curated by Steven Matijcio. The show opens Friday, Sept. 14 from 7:30 8:30 p.m. at Oakville Galleries in Centennial Square, 120 Navy St. It will be followed by a reception in Gairloch Gardens, 1306 Lakeshore Rd. E., at 8:30 p.m. The artist will be in attendance. Learn to Skate!
