Raiders first to claim under-13 boys' title By Sean Durack SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER VAUGHAN -- The Oakville Raiders made history last weekend by becoming the first local under-13 boys' team to bring home an Ontario Cup title. The Raiders, competing out of the South Region Soccer League (SRSL) this season with a 13-2-1 record in the Elite Division, defeated their league rival, the Mississauga-based Dixie Lions, 1-0 in a gripping final showdown Saturday. In essence, the match -- held at Vaughan's Ontario Soccer Centre before more than 150 vocal supporters who braved the frigid temperatures to cheer on their sides -- was a fifthgame rubber match, as the two teams split the four prior meetings this summer. The correct two teams made it VAUGHAN -- Two second-half goals enabled the Oakville Fusion to pull away from the Welland Wizards in Sunday's Ontario Cup under-15 Tier 2 boys' final, making some history in the process. The Fusion's 3-1 win at Vaughan's Ontario Soccer Centre marked the first time a development team from Oakville won a coveted Ontario Cup championship. "We believed we could win the game. This is a very special group with a real love for the game," said Fusion head coach David Edwards, adding the team graduated into the tough loop with Welland -- which won the league regularseason title this year -- halfway through the season. "They worked and trained hard all year and I am amazed at their sacrifices, to themselves and to the team. The win completely belongs to the lads." Oakville appeared poised for the final from the onset, while Welland took some time to come to life. The rocky start for Welland, in front of a energetic crowd of 150 people, was accentuated in the fourth minute as some miscommunication among Wizards defenders produced a loose ball that Jordan North quickly capitalized on, booting it past Welland keeper Kevin Charrois. The Wizards had a great deal of difficulty setting up in the Oakville zone, as Fusion midfielders and defenders kept their sights set on their opponents and allowed only a few touches per drive. In the 12th minute, Welland's strong show of spectator support in the stands unveiled itself when Cody Vansoelen banked one past Gianmarco Castro -- the only shot to get past the Fusion netminder, who would later make several pivotal stops.
