www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday October 17, 2007 - 5 Speeding motorists paying a steep price It has been 17 days since new tough provisions to the Highway Traffic Act came into force on Sunday, Sept. 30, and Halton Police have not been shy about using them. On Wednesday, Oct. 3, a driver traveling on Tremaine Road, near Lower Base, was charged with stunt driving after, police say, his vehicle reached 118 km/hr in a 60 km/hr zone. Under the new provisions the man had his license suspended and his car immediately seized for seven days. In another incident, which took place the following morning, a young mother was stopped as, police say, she was observed driving 108 km/hr in a 50 km/hr zone on Sixth Line, north of Lower Base. The woman's excuse, that she was in a hurry to pick up her kids, was not enough to stop the suspension of her license and the loss of her vehicle for seven days. Police say the new Highway Traffic Act provisions continued to net speeders on Thursday, Oct. 11, when a 19year-old was stopped for driving 160 km/hr in a 70 km/hr zone. The man's license was suspended and the car, which belonged to his father, was seized for seven days. In addition to the loss of license and vehicle, people charged with stunt driving can also lose a lot of money with the minimum fine for the charge being $2,000 while the maximum fine is $10,000. Those charged with stunt driving can have their licenses suspended for as long as two years for a first offence or as long as 10 years for subsequent offences.
