She is an honorary member of the Steering Committee for ATHENA Oakville and for the past four years served on the board of ATHENA International. For seventeen years, Judy taught at Sheridan College, co-ordinating and teaching in the Women's Programs. She continued her work with women in association with Perris Training and Development by co-ordinating employment/career planning conferences for women in Halton, Peel and Hamilton. Now retired, she is part of the Perris Team and helps out on a parttime basis. Judy is a Past Chair of the Sexual Assault and Violence Intervention Services, formerly the Rape Crisis Centre and continues to volunteer with them among other organizations. Second Recipient Laura Kupfreschmidt Seventh Recipient Norma Gamble Laura formed Macdonald Scott Consultants in 1992 to help entrepreneurs. For seven years she successfully ran the Halton Professional Business Women's Network. Since receiving the ATHENA Award, she initiated the Macdonald Scott Award of Excellence to encourage and reward young women pursuing a post-secondary education.To date ten scholarships have been presented. Third Recipient Anne Day Eighth Recipient Mary Jane Howie Anne Day is the founder of Company of Women, an organization that supports, connects and promotes women in business. This fall she launched a magazine, Company. For seven years Anne volunteered with ATHENA Oakville, during which time she served on the board of the ATHENA Foundation. Anne now serves on the Governor's Council of Opportunity International, a charity that provides micro credit loans to women in developing countries. Business owner, Mary Jane's passion is the Girl Guides. Working her way up the ranks to Area Commissioner, she was responsible for 1,700 guiders and 8,000 girls. Mary Jane has co-led six trips to vaccinate children against polio in third world countries and through the Red Cross is actively involved in Oakville's emergency disaster plan. An active Rotarian, Mary Jane is Past President of the newest Rotary Club in Oakville. Fourth Recipient Patricia Dillon Ninth Recipient Sheila Kuyper The Manager of Corporate Relations for the Canadian mining company, Teck Cominco Limited. In 2000, Pat became the first woman president of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum, a technical society established in 1898 and is currently the President of the Prospectors and Developer's Association of Canada. Paving the way for other women in this male-dominated industry, Pat helped establish the Women in Mining Network. Through her involvement with industry associations mentors women within mining industry. Sheila is a teacher at Appleby College, and a pioneer for women in the sport of sprint canoe. She has worked internationally to organize women canoe teams, and as result of her campaigning, women's canoe events are now recognized in the World Championships and World Games. Sheila has coached local dragon boat teams and is actively involved with Relay to Life. Fifth Recipient Kathy Parke Tenth Recipient Brenda Zimmerman Kathryn is an Account Executive with E.I. duPont Canada. She continues in a sales and marketing role. Kathryn worked on the steering committee for the recent merger of Big Brothers of Halton and Big Sisters of Oakville. She continues to work on the board of the new agency and is currently leading the nominating committee to ensure continued recruitment of board members. Kathryn and Little Sister Lisa will celebrate 3 years matched in September. It is no co-incidence that Brenda is one of the key speakers at the Judy program, a professional development program for women leaders. She is someone who walks the talk, having mentored students, women in business and the public sector for years. She is an AIDS activist, focusing particularly on the plight of women and children in Africa and spearheaded an MBA internship program where students work on change strategies in the prevention of AIDS.
