Park patrol nets handgun A youth is facing a number of firearms related offences after a routine park patrol by a Halton police officer resulted in the discovery of a .45-calibre handgun. Tuesday evening, Constable Omar Nadim was patrolling a park, located in the area of Margaret Drive and Elmwood Road, when he approached a youth to investigate a possible liquor infraction. The youth fled the scene after seeing the officer. Nadim pursued on foot and says he observed the youth drop something on the ground. According to police it was a black firearm with a full-loaded magazine containing .45-calibre ammunition. A K9 unit that was called in led police to the rear yard of a nearby residence and with the assistance of the homeowner a .45-calibre handgun was located within the home. As a result of the investigation, the young person was arrested and charged with nine Criminal Code firearms related offences, one count of possession of crack cocaine and two counts of breach of probation. The young person, who cannot be identified because of the Young Offenders Act, remains in custody awaiting a bail hearing. This incident continues to be investigated by Halton Police assisted by members of the Provincial Guns and Gangs Unit and the Provincial Weapons Enforcement Unit. Youths face robbery charges Several Oakville youths are facing charges in connection with a series of robberies, which occurred in the North Oakville area. Between Sept. 28, and Oct. 6, four robberies occurred in which young people walking in parks and wooded areas were approached by a group of young men and robbed, sometimes at knifepoint. One 15-year-old boy who had no valuables to surrender was assaulted, police say. On Tuesday evening, information gathered by detectives from the Oakville Criminal Investigations Robbery Team led to the arrest of a 14-year-old Oakville youth who was charged with one count of robbery. The following day investigators arrested a 14-year-old and a 16-year-old who were both from Oakville. They were charged with two counts of robbery. A fourth Oakville youth believed to be involved has been identified by police, but has yet to be arrested. Police say they will be arresting this young person shortly. The three youths, who cannot be named because of the Young Offenders Act, are scheduled to appear in a Milton Court on Dec. 13. The Halton Regional Police Service is continuing to investigate these incidents.
