www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday November 9, 2007 - 37 Clarke also member of CIS champion Blues Coralena Velson was OFSAA winner in 1988 The name of the senior girls' cross-country 1988 provincial champion was misspelt in a graphic that appeared in Wednesday's edition of The Oakville Beaver. Former White Oaks student Coralena Velson was the OFSAA senior girls' champion in 1988, one of only three Oakville athletes to win individual cross-country gold in the past 34 years. Velson's first name is incorrectly spelt in the OFSAA records, causing the error. Continued from page 36 what she meant to the team. At one point during the celebration on the Varsity Centre field, they lifted her up on their shoulders. Perhaps it was a little bit of payback. While the Blues team is loaded with talented players, it would be hard to argue that, at least at some point this season, O'Hara didn't carry the team. At least that's the way voters for the Liz Hoffman Trophy, awarded to the CIS player of the year, saw it. The St. Thomas Aquinas grad was presented with the award last week, the night before the championship tournament opened in Toronto. "Her speed on the ball and her ability to eliminate defenders one-on-one are her biggest strengths," said Blues coach John DeSouza. "She's taken a huge step since she played with the national team. She studies the game and she's very creative in the way she thinks. Her understanding of the game is much better." O'Hara played her first game for the national team during a tour of South Africa in January and scored her first goal for Canada during the 4 Nations Tournament in Chile in May. She also represented Canada at the Pan American Games in Rio de Janiero. While that experience didn't include any medals, it had a profound effect on her game. "It was pivotal," the arts and science student said. "I improved so much in my time with the national team. When I came back to university, the game seemed to have slowed down. It seemed like everything was happening in slow motion." O'Hara had scored 12 goals in 2006 to earn CIS first-team all-star honours. But she began 2007 with three goals in a season-opening 4-0 win over Waterloo and added two more in each of the next two games. She would score in 12 of the Blues' 14 games, including eight multiple-goal contests. O'Hara also credited DeSouza for allowing her "to play my style of field hockey and have fun with it and constantly challenging me to be better, by showing me new moves and areas where I can improve." The first setback for O'Hara and the OAKVILLE MANY OF YOUR FAVORITES ON CLEARANCE GOLDEN GIRL: Heather Clarke (right) receives her CIS field hockey gold medal Sunday. Blues came in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) final, where Guelph edged U of T 2-1 to take the championship. The disappointment didn't last long. As former coach Beth Ali presented the Blues with their silver medals, she whispered, `The last time we won CIS (in 1996), we lost OUAs.' "Right there, we had our motivation," O'Hara said. Sunday, O'Hara helped the Blues repeat history. Now, with one year left at U of T, the only question left is: What does she do for an encore? "I have no idea," O'Hara said. "Everything that could have gone right this year, did." Oakville's Heather Clarke was also a member of the University of Toronto Blues national championship team. The third-year forward had two goals for the Blues this season and added another in the CIS tournament, scoring the Blues' first goal in a 2-2 tie with Guelph in the round robin. Meanwhile, former Iroquois Ridge student Effie Petrou joined O'Hara on the CIS first-all star team and the CIS alltournament team. The second-year York University midfielder scored four goals for the Lions this season. SIDEWALK SALE!
