Continued from page 1 she was told about O'Neill's reaction. "I stand by my facts and I regret that I forgot to sign it. I wanted to make my feelings known," said the 2006 Oakville NDP candidate. A "group of like-minded women also planned to picket outside the convention centre, but it didn't materialize," added Agrell. In her letter Agrell stated: "Ms. O'Neill...had an abortion herself at the age of 19. At that time this was an illegal procedure and there was no guarantee that it would be done safely. Many women who turned in desperation to back-street abortionists, suffered and died at their hands. Between 1926 and 1947 statistics show that approximately 5,000 Canadian women died as a result of illegal abortions." It also states later that, "(O'Neill's) history suggests that she has made many impulsive mistakes in her life, but has been fortunate to survive them all with the help of excellent legal and healthcare systems." But it appeared the letter, which was intended to raise doubt about O'Neill, failed as Tina Agrell the 350 people who each paid $75 to attend the event gave her a standing ovation after her speech. The 59-year-old actress, model and author is the spokesperson for the Silent No More Campaign, a grassroots effort comprised of women who have had abortions. Launched in March, it intends to "make the public aware of the devastation abortion brings to women, men, and their families." O'Neill had an abortion in the early '70s because her fiancé was unsupportive of the pregnancy. She said she didn't want to abort, but pressure from him and advice from her parents and friends led her to it. "Life looked good from the outside, but hurt so bad on the inside," said O'Neill. At 14 she attempted suicide, broke her back and neck in three places from a horse riding accident at 15, married her first husband at 17, had a daughter Aimee and was divorced six years later. She has since been married eight more times to seven different men, and had two more children. She also skirted death three times. O'Neill blames her surgically-induced abortion for the nine miscarriages she also endured. "I was sure I was being punished for my heinous act, but God doesn't punish us for abortion," said O'Neill. At 38, a newfound faith in God changed her life and since then O'Neill has written about the aftermath of abortion, created a ministry to help others and pushed for governmentfunded research into it. According to Statistics Canada, in 2004 there were 100,763 abortions in Canada. Induced abortions were most common among women in their 20s and accounted for 53 per cent of all women.
