24 - The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday November 21, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Salvation Army needs volunteers for kettle drive The Oakville Salvation Army needs volunteers to help with its Christmas Kettle Campaign. The kettles, with which officials hope to raise $110,000 for the needy of the community, are being set up for a campaign that will run until Dec. 24. However, besides money the Salvation Army needs bodies to man these kettles. "Your participation would be greatly appreciated," said Bev Gardner, Oakville Salvation Army spokesperson. "Students are welcome to take part in this Christmas opportunity for which you will receive volunteer hours for school." Gardner notes that people can volunteer to help at the kettles any time between Monday and the end of the campaign on Dec. 24. How long people volunteer for is also negotiable, but most shifts only last for about three to four hours. "Because it involves standing by a kettle we understand that it can become somewhat boring if you're standing there and no one's giving," said Gardner. While three hours of standing by a kettle may be boring it is also for a great cause as the money that is gathered, because the volunteers were there to receive it, helps an organization that services around 2,000 disadvantaged people each year in the Oakville community. These people in need can range from someone who was unexpectedly laid off to a person someone who has lost everything in a house fire. "These donations help us continue our programs to help people in need in our community. They help with housing and shelter programs, the food bank, just everything," said Gardner. "It lets us help people at a crisis point." Gardner notes that all the people the Salvation Army helps and all the good things that they do would not be possible if it were not for volunteers, which is why getting volunteer support at the Christmas Kettle Campaign is so important. "People are going out into our community and volunteering and they are the backbone of this ministry. They really are," she said. "It's those that give that make the difference whether it's time, financial or just stopping in to say, `hi,' or offering various services. We're just so grateful."
