www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday December 28, 2007 - 15 Donate by New Year's s to re wi de L AST DAY E V TO SA 1 3 DEC Continued from page 5 of Sanikiluaq doesn't see polar bears until the ice is in. In 1978, 45 female and 15 male reindeer were relocated to the Belcher Islands and today the herd numbers 800-1,000, however caribou were wiped out in there in the 1880s because of a warm winter and too much ice. The community of Sanikiluaq has undertaken many entrepreneurial programs which are featured on its web site at www.najuqsivik.com. Carving and traditional Inuit basketmaking provide income for many in the community. Nunavut is twice the land mass size of Ontario and over half of its population (30,000) is under 25.
