An Oakville Curling Club team was one win short of making the playoffs at last weekend's Ontario Junior Curling Championships. Matt Mapletoft, Scott Howard, Jake Walker and Jamie Parker concluded the championships in Coldwater with a 3-4 record. In order to advance to the semifinals, the four teenagers needed a victory in their final game of the round-robin to force a tie-breaking playoff. However, the rink was thwarted by a powerful Ottawa squad which made it to the final before losing the title to a St. Thomas foursome. The St. Thomas rink earned the provincial junior men's title and a trip to the Canadian championships next month in Sault Ste. Marie. A Burlington team claimed the junior women's crown. Mapletoft, the skip of the Oakville team, admitted it wasn't the rink's best performance, but the players are looking forward to trying again next year. "We'll keep going from here and build on it," he said. He added the team, which is in its first year together, will learn from the experience and move on. He said they will use a few more events this season to help improve their game. "It's all about getting ready for next season now," he said. Though the team came up empty in its quest for the provincial championship, it is the reigning Zone 9 champion and was also successful in claiming a regional championship. All of the players on the team have been curling for about ten years.
