It will take place from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 17 in the OTMH Auditorium (Lower Level), at the hospital located at 327 Reynolds St. Volunteer and staff representatives from various areas of the hospital will be available to discuss the different volunteering opportunities. A variety of volunteer opportunities is available in both direct and indirect patient care for men, women and youth 14 years of age and up. "Volunteering with the OTMH Auxiliary is a great opportunity to be part of a team, share your experience, learn new skills and develop lasting friendships," explains Joean Meyer, President of the OTMH Auxiliary. "If your New Year's resolution involves making a difference in the lives of others, we would love for you to join our team." With more than 700 volunteers, the OTMH Auxiliary contributes well over 83,000 hours of service annually across more than 70 hospital services. They provide care and comfort on the nursing units, as well as in the renal dialysis units and the emergency department; greet outpatients and visitors; offer magazines and tuck items to patients; fundraise (Bingo, HELPP lottery, raffle ticket sales and the Gift Shop); provide behind-thescenes assistance, and much, much more. Through their creative and ambitious efforts, last year the Auxiliary raised $330,000 toward the purchase of much needed medical equipment and the refurbishment of various areas of the hospital. A variety of volunteering opportunities is available for front-line and leadership positions both in direct patient care such as inpatient units, rehabilitation, patient transport, and outpatient clinics such as ophthalmology, the G.I. suite and surgical day care, or working in indirect patient care helping out at the information desk, the gift shop or fundraising activities. The volunteer application package can even be downloaded from the website. A three to four-hour shift weekly (days, evenings or weekends) is all it takes to make a difference at the local hospital.
