Cats, dogs, birds, rabbits and many other animals are given hope when they find homes in new households. In the majority of cases the animals are young, but increasingly senior animals are waiting to find homes too. "Shelters used to be filled with animals up to the age of two years of age," stated Heather White, Community Outreach and Education Manager at the Oakville & District Humane Society. "More and more, it is becoming common for older animals to find themselves at the shelter," said White. Veterinary professionals consider an animal over seven years of age to be a `senior.' The Oakville & District Humane Society currently has 10 animals that qualify as senior pets under this description. "People don't always consider the benefits of adopting a senior animal, but there are many good reasons to consider this as a great option," noted White. In general older pets require less training, are less active and are often less disruptive to a new home. The personality of these animals is established, so when considering a senior pet you can pick the characteristics that you want in a pet. Senior pets have also been around long enough to understand how to live with humans. They are likely to be housetrained, past a destructive stage and more able to fit into a household easily.
