Richardson Division rallies to win boys' hockey all-star game Local players also denied victory in girls' contest The Richardson Division scored five unanswered goals -- three of them in the final seven minutes -- as it rallied to defeat the Volpe Division in Wednesday's Halton high school boys' hockey all-star game in Burlington. The Volpe Division, which included the Oakville schools, led 2-0 but could not hold off the Richardson Division in the 5-2 loss. Loyola's Nathan Banton had the only goal of the first period, set up by St. Thomas Aquinas' Brian Urquhart and Blakelock's Matt Fillman. The Volpe Division upped its lead to 2-0 just 47 seconds into the middle frame on a goal by Pat Redshaw of Iroquois Ridge. Rob McLay of Nelson and Aquinas' David Stillo assisted on the goal. That lead held until late in the third when Chad Newman pulled the Richardson squad within one. Kyle Baker tied the game 26 seconds into the third. It remained 2-2 until Mike Parsons gave the Richardson Division its first lead of the game with 6:13 to play. Connor Downes put the game away with a pair of goals 16 seconds apart in the final two minutes. Other Oakville students to play in the boys' all-star game were Holy Trinity's Joe Trauzzi and Mark Boresok, Oakville Trafalgar's Sam Labenski and Dylan Gilbert, Abbey Park's Max Mihaichuk and Tyler Schlonies, Loyola's Shane Wilton, Blakelock's Matt Fyfe and Ridge's Karl Feltmate. In the girls' all-star match, the North-West topped the Central 4-1. The North-West jumped out to a 2-0 lead before Loyola's Brook Kotack made it a onegoal game. However, the North-West would add two more to secure the victory. St. Thomas Aquinas' Cassy Russo was named the Volpe's top forward while Bishop Reding's Lauren Kelly was the team's top defender. Also suiting up for the Central team were Loyola's Jessica Toth and Vanessa Savelli, White Oaks' Sarah Curry and Missy Kennedy, Trinity's LeeAnn Pallet, Mo Shea and Julie Kahnart, Blakelock's Emily Brown, Abbey Park's Kristin Maton, Ridge's Amanda Ruprecht, Darcy Breakey and Emma Revell, Aquinas' Jaclyn Peluso and OT's Erin Beaver. Bur Bear tournament The Bur Bear Hockey Tournament began play yesterday and will wrap up tomorrow at Appleby Ice Centre in Burlington. The championship game in the annual tournament's gold division will be held tomorrow at 3:45 p.m. at Appleby 2. Semifinal games are at 11:45 a.m. (Appleby 2) and 12:15 p.m. (Appleby 1). The gold division features Oakville's Appleby College. The White Division final will be played at 1:30 p.m. at Appleby 2 while the Purple Division will be at 2:00 p.m. on Appleby 1. Oakville teams in the Purple and White divisions include Blakelock, Ridge, Abbey Park, Loyola and Trinity.
