www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday February 6, 2008 - 13 Gala to help fund autism therapy On Saturday, Feb. 9, the family and staff of Children's College-Behaviour Institute at 618 The Queensway, Toronto, will hold a fundraising gala event. Money raised will be donated to the Behaviour Institute Children's Bursary to help offset annual tuition costs to families whose children attend Children's College. Dubbed Music and Romance, the gala begins with cocktails at 6 p.m. and dinner at 7 p.m. at Le Royal Meridien King Edward Hotel, 37 King St. E., Toronto. It will feature a four-course dinner and wine, dancing to live music, a silent auction, entertainment and door prizes. Tickets cost $125 per person and are available by calling 416-251-9277. The college is run by two Oakville residents, Dr. Nicole Walton-Allen and Dr. Joel Hundert, both psychologists and board certified behaviour analysts. It offers Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) treatment. The cost of ABA is expensive and many families struggle to make ends meet with little or no government funding available for most families. Long waiting lists for assessments and treatment through the government give families a sense of urgency as they move toward treatment for their children sooner than later. Private schools like Children's College provide assessments and treatment with little or no waiting. Their psychologists, teachers and staff are well trained and skilled to help children overcome behaviours that get in the way of having meaningful relationships and of learning new skills. Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects about one in 250 children to a point where about half never develop independent skills. Research has indicated that ABA is a treatment that works if provided intensively (20 to 40 hours a week). For information about the gala contact 416-251-9277, email amieb4070@hotmail.com; or fax 416-251-4688.
