www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday February 8, 2008 - 25 Do you have a YMCA story to tell? I t's hard to imagine a world without the YMCA. It was founded by George Williams in London, England on June 6, 1844 in response to unhealthy social conditions arising in big cities at the end of the Industrial Revolution. By 1851, there were 24 Ys in Great Britain. Today the Y is active in 120 countries and there are 14,000 local associations across the globe. What's the point? The Y has touched and made a positive impact on many, many lives. The other point is the YMCA is a charity no one is denied access to YMCA programs and services because of an inability to pay the fees. On Feb. 15, the YMCA of Oakville will begin its annual month-long campaign the YMCA Strong Kids Campaign. We will be raising funds to help single mothers like Gemma, who needs child care so she can work to feed her family, and for kids like John so he can have a positive place to play and do homework after school. We will be raising funds so Kristin and Matthew can go to camp this summer so that they can climb and jump and create. Gemma, John, Kristin and Matthew are worth the investment it's an investment in their future. Has the YMCA touched your life? We need your help to tell the YMCA story, so everyone can understand the YMCA is a charity, and how we touch the lives of so many. Please send your Y story to Deb Thomson, Supervisor of Philanthropy at the YMCA of Oakville, via email at debth@oakville.ymca.ca, or call 905-845-5597, ext. 317. Or you can go online and create your own YMCA story webpage at www.ymcastrongkids.ca. Just click on the bottom left on `YMCA Staff/Volunteer Login' and go to `Create my Web Page.' While you are there, take a look at some other Y stories. You might just read a story about someone you know. Or someone you could help. Thanks for helping us to build strong kids, strong families and strong communities. The YMCA of Oakville is a charitable association open to all, dedicated to providing life-long opportunities for health enhancement and personal growth. -- Submitted by the YMCA of Oakville EXPERIENCING PAINFUL HANDS or FEET due to DIABETIC NEUROPATHY?
