www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday February 13, 2008 - 7 LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Oakville MP has amnesia Re: Back to business, Oakville Beaver, Feb. 2 How unfortunate that Oakville MP Bonnie Brown does not heed her own words about politicians being mindful of important issues on the minds of Canadians. Brown appears to suffer from amnesia. While criticizing the Harper government on Afghanistan she makes no mention that it was a Liberal government that actually sent troops to Afghanistan as well as insisting that Canada take the arduous Helmand province southern territory. At the same time, the party of which Brown is an advocate, must have known that the Canadian military did not, at the time, have the modern tools to actually fulfill the onerous mission. This constituent is actually mindful of that and the fact that her party grossly underfunded the military but had no conscience about sending our troops anyway. Indeed, her leader would invade Pakistan. Uninhibited by her amnesia, Brown mistakenly castigates the Harper government over `interventionist military policy' as if the original decision to go to Afghanistan was a Harper government decision. It very much sounds as if it was her party and government that sided with the miscreant, Bush. Her criticism should be targeted at herself and other representatives of her party. On Afghanistan, Brown is evidently not keeping faith with the people of that unfortunate land, is clearly not of the same mindset as the UN or NATO, or some of the current leaders in her party, such as Ignatieff and Rae. Indeed, her position is more akin to that of the NDP. Brown's comments on the economy are no less misinformed and, as for the environment and yet again, her party had no trouble signing the Kyoto accord but did not have the political cajones to do anything at all to implement. I would invite Brown to heed her own words and be mindful that the people of Canada, of Ontario and of Oakville are sick of our representatives throwing bricks at each other without recognizing their own mis-steps. She should understand that we know that her party is holding up changes to crime bills which she does not disclose, let alone offer an apology. That is an important issue with local ramifications. J.
