8- The Oakville Beaver, Friday February 15, 2008 www.oakvillebeaver.com NO RESPECT: Jamie Banks stands in the middle of his snow fort that was destroyed by vandals last Saturday. Vandals wrecked snow fort I am writing to you because I have had enough with the disrespect of people in this town. By this I mean the increasing amount of vandals and thieves in this community. I live in Glen Abbey and in the past year, two bikes have been stolen out of our garage on different occasions and another cut from the bike rack at the nearby school, but for me the worst has been the vandalism last weekend that cannot be fixed or replaced. Last Saturday night my brother, Scott Banks, heard a noise from the front lawn and got up to see what it was about. Two males about 18 years old were hacking at our snow fort with hockey sticks, laughing as over ten hours of work in the last three days fell to the ground in less than a minute. After destroying the front half beyond repair they proceeded to hop in the back of a red jeep with more laughing joining in before they pulled away. Our fort was as high as the second storey on our house and stretched across our lawn, complete with an igloo, arched windows and very large tower. Anyone who has driven down Monks Passage would have no doubt as to which fort I am referring. One driver even stopped to take a picture. I am stuck here wondering why. These people purposefully drove to our fort with hockey sticks to destroy it. That is what disgusts me the most, that these pathetic people would go out of their way to make us miserable. We did not make our fort to see it ruined one night by 18 year olds who should know better. This is a great town with some great people in it, but since moving here two years ago I feel overwhelmed by the attitude of a few individuals that ruin it for everyone. I moved here from Mississauga, which you would think would have more crime and vandalism, because it is bigger. Well, this was not true in the slightest, at least with my experience there. Never once was anything stolen or vandalized on our previous property. In conclusion, I must ask anyone who knows the fools who destroyed our fort to ask them why they would do such a terrible thing. Something must be done to explain to these people that what they do is really wrong and to have their friends or family talk to them is the first step in making Oakville a better place.
