The meeting begins at 7 p.m. Running uncontested for the nomination is high school teacher Michelle Bilek, who is treasurer of the Oakville NDP Riding Association. "We're very excited to have Michelle run for the nomination," said riding association president Brian Hopkins. "Once again, the Oakville NDP is pleased to present a candidate who offers a real alternative to the Liberal and Conservative corporate agenda of war, social inequality and environmental crisis." Bilek has been a long-time social activist in Oakville and an advocate for workers' rights, the abolition of homelessness and poverty, international peace, and environmental sustainability. "I am looking forward to discussing these issues with my fellow Oakville citizens on their doorsteps," she said. "I want to meet and speak with as many voters as possible throughout the election." The Oakville NDP plans to run a campaign that speaks to the concerns of wage earners and working families. "For far too long, corporations and wealthy executives have controlled the economic agenda of Liberal and Conservative governments. It's time that working people finally have their voices heard throughout Oakville and in Ottawa," said Bilek. "We know that Stephen Harper's agenda is failing working families. In his economic statement last fall, he chose to give corporations billions of dollars of further tax breaks instead of investing in the priorities of everyday people like health care, education and child care," she said. "As for Stephane Dion and the Liberals, they're continuing to cave in and support Harper's corporate agenda and the war in Afghanistan." Also featured at the meeting will be guest speaker Gail McCabe, a Mississauga NDP candidate and York University professor in sociology, who will talk about the upcoming election.
