www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday February 22, 2008 - 3 Cops say to eliminate `hitman' as a threat Anyone in Oakville who has received an e-mail from a self-proclaimed hitman, suggesting he has been hired to kill you, can relax as you are probably one of thousands of people worldwide to get one. Halton police are investigating an apparent fraud scheme in which several Oakville residents have been sent threatening e-mails in an effort to extort money from them. Police said the various e-mails brought to their attention are similar in nature and, essentially, say the sender has been paid to track down and kill the recipient of the e-mail. The sender then says a friend of the recipient has arranged and paid for a contract killing, the identity of whom the sender is willing to reveal for a price. Police are telling residents not to respond to the messages as they are part of a scheme -- the apparent intent of which is to alarm and then defraud anyone who writes back. The e-mails appear to be a spam program that sends out thousands of messages worldwide on a daily basis. The addresses the e-mails are sent to are random with many of the messages originating from countries outside of Canada, particularly those in Africa. Residents are encouraged to report apparent fraud incidents to "Phone Busters" at 1-888-495-8501, www.phonebusters.com or at www.recol.ca. "Phone Busters" is a joint program by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the Ontario Provincial Police. This program collates fraudulent solicitations received by telephone and e-mail. Drug bust nets police a slew of firearms charges An Oakville man is facing a slew of drug and weapons related charges after a police raid on an Oakville home turned up an illegal handgun and cocaine. The Tuesday raid was prompted by a Valentine's Day rendezvous at which, police say, an undercover officer allegedly purchased 3.3 grams of cocaine from the accused for $180. The exchange took place in the Rebecca Street and Third Line area near Hopedale Mall. Police followed up this alleged encounter with the execution of a Controlled Drugs and Substances Act search warrant at 261 Trowbridge Place, where investigators say they discovered seven grams of cocaine, $9,730 in cash, a digital scale and a .40-calibre Smith and Wesson handgun with its serial numbers obliterated. "It's good anytime you get drugs off the street and when you combine that with a firearm it's even better," said Detective Sergeant Al Albano. "Anytime you can get a weapon off the street is great." Albano said cocaine and crack cocaine dealing is prevalent throughout Halton region. Steven Salvatore Dinino, 19, is charged with numerous offences including one count of trafficking in cocaine, one count possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking, one count of careless firearm storage, one count of unauthorized possession of a firearm, one count of tampering with a firearm, one count of breaching firearm regulations and one count of possessing a firearm obtained by crime. Police continue to investigate and anyone with information is asked to contact the Regional Drug and Morality Bureau at 905-825-4777, 905-6341831, ext. 5044 or by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
