"What he taught me was mainly about composition and technicality with the camera," she said. Horvath says after seeing Eifert's work, she has a long way to go. "It's the depth, the emotions I can see in his pictures," she said. "It's incredible when the picture can tell you about the person, about the place and he captures that." After Lake Huron, Eifert was off to Boston to do some photographic work. Horvath got a call from him while he was there asking if she'd like to come out to take photos of a Chinese New Year's celebration. "I was there in no time," Horvath said, laughing. "It was incredible. We looked at all my pictures and all his, and I was like, `Was I in the same place?'" she added, smiling. "But I did get a few good ones." A native of Hungary who moved to Oakville in the 1980s, Horvath met Eifert on her 50th birthday, Feb. 1. A friend e-mailed to tell her a Hungarian photographer had a show in Toronto, so she cancelled her dinner plans and attended, although she didn't know who Eifert was at the time. "I just felt I needed to talk to him, and I'm so happy I did," she said. "He said that's your passion, you have a lot to learn and I will teach you. It was incredible on my birthday. I thought I was just going to have dinner, which would have been nice, but that was more than the icing on the cake." Especially since Eifert, a 40year photography veteran who judges entries for National Geographic photos, says he sees potential in Horvath's work. "I have a long way to go. I've just started my photography journey," she said. "By being close to people who know like him, he's incredible. You learn so much." Horvath, an avid traveller, has been snapping pictures since she was a little girl. A business development and technical manager for Oakville based Freeze-Dry Foods, it wasn't until last summer Horvath began dedicating her free time to photography. She has since joined the Oakville Camera Club and Burlington Trillium Photographic Club, and had work included in Oakville's 150th Anniversary celebrations, in the Better Living Show, at the Burlington Art Centre and at Hopedale Mall. Currently, her photos from a trip to Nova Scotia hang at Corner Photo in downtown Toronto, and in June, Horvath will have a show at CJ's Café featuring photos she took during the workshops with Eifert. "This hobby of photography has evolved into something more now. It's unstoppable," said Horvath, smiling. "I just have to do it. It's my passion." For more on Lisa Horvath, visit www.lisahorvath.com.
