Plans for Oakville's South Shell Waterfront Park met with largely positive feedback when they were recently unveiled for the first time during a Town Hall public information meeting. The proposed park, which will be located in the area of Lakeshore Road West and Great Lakes Boulevard, is expected to feature such components as walking trails, shoreline outlooks, garden spaces, beach access, a children's playground area and enhanced wildlife conservation aspects. "We're looking to rehabilitate the existing natural vegetation communities in this area that will promote and support bird migrations to and from Lake Ontario," said Janis Olbina, manager of Park Planning and Development, Town of Oakville. "There will be a mixture of plantings at all different levels from grasses to shrubs to full woodlot communities and this will be interspersed with trail development." Besides a green place for wildlife to live, Olbina is hoping the South Shell Waterfront Park becomes a landmark destination that draws both local people and out-of-towners. Pending budget approval, the Town intends to begin constructing the park this year with Olbina working with a budget of around $2.5 million to make it happen. The design of the park met with the approval of many of the residents who attended the South Shell Waterfront Park public information meeting. "It's beautiful," said Sam Sanadi as he examined the proposed park designs. "It looks very nice. The way it looks now the kids can't really play there, but this will be really nice." Joe Rozic, who lives across the street from where the park will be, also liked what he saw in the proposed designs. "I think it will be good," he said."I like the walking trails along the water." While largely supportive of the coming park, local resident Grant Goodfellow has concerns about the wildlife that currently occupy the site.
