The annual event is staged by Stew Dickie and his wife Peggy in honour of their daughter and their annual Relay for Life team, Pam's Pride, which was one of the top fundraising teams at the 2007 Oakville Relay for Life event held at Appleby College every June. LIESA KORTMANN / OAKVILLE BEAVER SIGNING UP: Many turned up at the recent Relay for Life kickoff event held at Appleby College to sign up a team of 10 and select a camp site for the overnight fundraiser slated to take place in early June. Relay for Life 2008 campaign in full swing Relay For Life 2008 will take place overnight Friday, June 6 to Saturday, June 7. It will run from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. on the grounds of private school Appleby College, located on Lakeshore Road just east of Fourth Line. That's the word on the signature fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Society Oakville Unit that has, since its inception in 2001, raised more than $2.8 million. The official kickoff for the event -- the first chance for teams to sign up to participate and even pick their campsite -- was held last week at Appleby College. Team captains found out some of the logistics of this year's event and an information session outlined what it's all about and how to take part for those who may have been curious, but new, to the relay event. Relay sees teams of participants take turn circling the track at Appleby College during the night to raise funds for the Canadian Cancer Society. Teams choose names, many even pick a theme and dress up for the event. There's lots to do while relay participants take turns circling the track. There is mainstage entertainment, shopping, food services and of course camaraderie. The relay is kicked off with a Survivors' Reception and then a Survivors' Victory Lap, which see cancer survivors walk the first lap. As night falls, luminaries in memory or support of people, are lit and circle the track itself lending their glow of hope to the fundraiser. In recent years, relay has what organizers call stabilized -- in part because of other events that have been born out of relay's own success -- so the kickoff is how organizers generate interest and excitement for the next edition.
