On Saturday, March 29 at 8 p.m., when the rest of the town and cities all over the world are observing an hour of lights out to raise awareness of global climate change, St. Jude's is turning the darkness into a party for a cause. Three causes, actually. Ticket sales will benefit the Oakville Children's Choir, Kerr Street Ministries, and the Community Foundation of Oakville's Environmental Fund. "It was just a crazy brainwave I had back about two months ago to celebrate this event, but in a very different kind of way," said Don Pangman, artistic director of the Celebration of the Arts, a program that has been drawing celebrated musical acts to perform at the church for the past 17 years. "Out of the Dark is unique, and it's not part of our series," Pangman explained. "It's something special we're doing." And it's all to commemo- "We're also going to make some poignant statements about the environment, which will be done by children from the choir." Don Pangman, Out of the Dark concert organizer rate Earth Hour, which began last year in Sydney, Australia, where lights were turned off for one hour to recognize global warming. The effort last March in Sydney reduced the city's energy consumption by 10.2 per cent for the hour, the equivalent of taking 48,000 cars off the road for an entire year and the world took notice. Earth Hour 2008 was born. "There's lot of ways to celebrate Earth Hour," said Pangman, who's been attending St. Jude's for more than 30 years. "We just thought if we could turn this into a benefit and help the community in three different ways, that's kind of neat." But, how exactly will this b. In terms of cutting down electricity, the church will be going the whole nine yards, with battery-operated microphones. The organist will be playing a piano instead of the organ. Other performers include Norine Burgess, Andrei Streliaev, David Free, Robert Miskey and the Oakville Children's Choir. But music isn't the only thing Out of the Dark concert-goers will be treated to. "We're also going to make some poignant statements about the environment, which will be done by children from the choir," said Pangman. Other important information will also come up during the hour of darkness, courtesy of Executive Director of Kerr Street Ministries, Ron Shantz. "He'll speak, maybe 30 seconds, five times during that hour, about different impacts that Kerr Street's having on clients," Pangman said, "and he'll do this through actual client statements." At 9 p.m., the lights will come on and the church organist will play. "I really hope we can have an actionpacked hour," said Pangman. "I'm very excited about the concert, because it's full of music, but it's also full of information, and it's assisting three organizations in our community." Money from tickets will be split equally three ways for the Oakville Children's Choir, Kerr Street Ministries, and the Community Foundation of Oakville's Environmental Fund. "I hope this is the beginning of an event we can do more often in the community," said Pangman. Out of the Dark is sponsored by Celebration of the Arts and St. Jude's Church.
