While excellent resources have long been available in Oakville to fight the disease at the medical level, individuals and their families have not always had the emotional, psychosocial, and practical support they so urgently require. With help from The Community Foundation of Oakville (CFO), Wellspring Halton-Peel was established in 2000 in the Town of Oakville, to meet the needs of men, women and children coping with cancer in the community. As part of a network of centres that provide psychological and emotional support, coping skills and education, Wellspring Halton-Peel offers over 45 unique programs to inform, support and empower cancer patients and their families. The Oakville centre now welcomes more than 10,000 visits from cancer patients and their loved ones annually. Committed to strengthening and enhancing our community's health and wellbeing, the CFO is helping cancer patients and their family cope with the stress of cancer and its treatments by funding a segment of The Healing Journey program at Wellspring Halton-Peel. Rooted in 25 years of research at the Princess Margaret Hospital, The Healing Journey is a progressive, multi-level program proven to significantly diminish anxiety, depression, fatigue, nausea and pain in cancer patients. Wellspring Halton-Peel now provides five levels of this program in a community-based setting. with cancer in Oakville and helping to equip them with the tools they need to face the future with dignity. The Healing Journey program combines techniques like support groups, spiritual care and coping skills with an educational component designed to help cancer patients improve quality of life and live longer than medically predicted. Having completed Level 1, many patients seek to advance their skills and participate in the next level. With the assistance of the CFO, more than 30 cancer patients and caregivers were able to complete Skills for Healing, Level 2 of The Healing Journey program last summer. Over the eight-week group psychotherapy and education program, cancer patients and caregivers were provided with the psychological and spiritual tools to achieve inner harmony, peace and healing. The program also allowed these individuals to further develop coping skills and stress reduction techniques taught in the introductory course. "I'm really glad I had the opportunity to participate in this program. It has made a big difference in my attitude about continuing as a person with life threatening disease," said one participant.
