On Tuesday the Fairfield Inn by Marriott, 2937 Sherwood Heights Dr., announced that it will participate in Earth Hour by turning off all of its parking lights, sign lights, lobby lights and pool lights on Saturday, March 29 from 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., a half hour longer than what is being advocated. "We figured we'd extend it a little bit and go beyond the time everyone else is doing and see how much that might make a difference," said Eddie Stark, the hotel's manager. The hotel's staff will also be encouraging guests to take part in the energy conservation phenomenon by turning out the lights in their rooms and joining staff in the lobby for a candlelight evening by a roaring fireplace. "We're doing as much to help the environment as we can," said Stark. "We think it's important for the future, for the future of our associates and their families and all of our guests. Every little bit helps." Hot chocolate, coffee and tea will be available to all registered guests as well as to anyone in the area who would like to come by the hotel and show their Earth Hour support. Stark noted that the executives who control the Marriott chain are also throwing their support behind Earth Hour and as such have called upon more than 50 hotels from Halifax to Vancouver to participate. Participation in Earth Hour will be the latest in a number of environmental initiatives undertaken by the Fairfield Inn by Marriott, Toronto/Oakville with the hotel also involved in Abitibi Consolidated and Recycled, a program where money made from the recycling of the hotel's office paper, magazines and newspapers is donated to the Children's Miracle Network.
