www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday April 16, 2008 - 17 Region declares GreenCart a success The majority of Halton residents are jumping on board with the Region's new GreenCart program, which started last week. The municipality reports that approximately 75 per cent of residents are already taking part in the initiative that sees kitchen scraps collected at the curbside for composting. "I would like to acknowledge the outstanding support for our new program during this first week of our new waste collection services," said Regional Chair Gary Carr. "With so many residents already engaged in the GreenCart program, we are well on our way to achieve our goal of diverting 60 per cent of waste away from the landfill." Another change is weekly Blue Box collection, and the Region says it has seen an increase of almost 30 per cent in the amount of Blue Box materials residents are putting out. The high participation levels in both programs have resulted in some minor delays in regular garbage and recycling collection, including delays in the delivery of GreenCarts to some homes. It should be noted that those who live in apartments and townhouse complexes won't receive GreenCarts at this time as they're being considered for the program at a later date. In order to minimize delays in waste collection and GreenCart distribution, the Region has taken the following measures: · Made arrangements to provide additional vehicles and resources to assist with the collection of garbage, Blue Box and GreenCart material during the first few weeks of the new waste collection service. Residents who experience a delay are advised to leave the material at the curb as it will be collected as soon as possible. · Stepped up its approach to complete the distribution of the remaining GreenCarts. Those who receive curbside waste collection who haven't received their GreenCart by Monday are advised to call the Region at 905825-6000 or e-mail accesshalton@halton.ca. · Created a dedicated hotline for waste collection and GreenCart program inquiries. Call the aforementioned number to be transferred to the hotline. · Held GreenCart open houses throughout the region. Visit www.halton.ca for times and locations of the remaining sessions to be held, or for more information on waste collection and GreenCart distribution. 2008 Gala Fundraiser "A Taste of Tango" Thursday, April 24th, 2008 St. Volodymyr Cultural Centre, Oakville Cocktails 6:30 p.m. followed by dinner, dancing, auctions and entertainment featuring Blue Heel Dance Studio, Go Freddie Go! dance band and The OCC Senior and Chamber Choirs.
