www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday April 19, 2008 - 27 EARTH DAY TUESDAY, APRIL 22 2008 Help cut out litter and keep our neighbourhood beautiful. Halton's first Eco-Innovations Environmental Conference on Earth Day Thomas A. Blakelock High School will host Oakville's first high school environmental conference with a celebrity line-up on Tuesday, April 22 -- Earth Day. Musician Sarah Harmer, CBC's Diana Swain, and Gil Penalosa, a founder of ciclovia, the name of regular car-free days now common in South America, are among inspirational guest speakers at ECO-INNOVATION 2008. More than 240 students from Oakville public and Catholic high schools will be challenged to tackle environmental issues at Halton's first Eco-Innovations Environmental Conference. Scheduled for Earth Day 2008, the conference will give participating students access to leading experts in the environmental arena on a local and provincial level who will share their knowledge on urban planning, recycling, and the power of the media in raising environmental awareness. "Students and teachers of Blakelock's Eco-School team, led by geography teacher James Stainton have organized a remarkable program for participants" said Rusty Baillie, CEO, The Community Foundation of Oakville (CFO). "It will be a powerful Earth Day experience for participating high schools. A grant from the Environmental Fund of the Community Foundation of Oakville provided the momentum for this Earth Day conference. Students on Blakelock's Eco-school team have shown terrific leadership in organizing the event. The CFO, in collaboration with Halton Learning Foundation, hopes to make this an annual event, hosted by a different secondary school every year," said Baillie. The Eco-Innovations conference is a signature project for the Oakville Environmental Fund established through money from the Town of Oakville, as an endowment fund by the CFO. The conference represents a partnership between the CFO and Halton Learning Foundation, will not only showcase what is already being done, but more importantly what students can do, on a local and international scale, to work towards the goal of environmental sustainability. "This conference promotes environmentally friendly lifestyles a perfect fit for the CFO's new Oakville Environmental Fund," said Anne Miskey, director of Community Initiatives with the CFO. "We are proud to support this initiative and hope to build on this partnership with local high schools," said Miskey. A variety of hands-on activities will challenge students to: · tackle urban sprawl-free design north of Dundas · create promotional TV ads or cartoons for the print media that will raise awareness of environmental issues. · craft amazing fashions from recycled clothing.
