www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday May 17, 2008 - 5 Committee backs work on Lakeshore Road West By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Oakville's Community Services Committee has recommended approval of $2.7 million worth of improvements to Lakeshore Road West between Burloak Drive and Great Lakes Boulevard. The roadwork, pending final approval by council on Tuesday, will include the introduction of on-street bike lanes, new/and or improved sidewalks, bus bays, intermittent centre-turn lanes with median treatments and traffic controls at Stevenson Road. A recent Environmental Assessment Study report also recommended intersection improvements, which would include the adding of a westbound right turning lane to the intersection at Burloak Drive as well as to the intersection at Great Lakes Boulevard. The report called the improvements necessary because the two-lane road suffers from poor pavement conditions and does not meet current or future requirements needed to accommodate pedestrian, vehicular or cycling traffic. Area residents have expressed concerns about certain aspects of the roadwork, which, for the most part, have been addressed said Dave Johnson, of the Town's Engineering & Construction Department. "One of the key components being reviewed further is the inclusion of the bus bays. Considering Oakville Transit plans to increase service along this corridor in the future bus bays are being recommended wherever technically feasible. These bus bays will allow transit to move out of a single lane of traffic for service pickup and drop off thereby eliminating disruptions to the flow of traffic, " said Johnson. "Staff met with the party concerned about the introduction of bus bays, and minor modifications to the bus bay design detail have been incorporated into the plan. Staff are of the opinion that the concerns have been resolved." Johnson said concerns about traffic being slowed down at Stevenson Road by installing a traffic signal have been addressed through a decision to place an Intersection Pedestrian Signal (IPS) in its place. This signal would not impede the corridor's traffic flow unless the pedestrian crossing button is pushed. With the components for the roadwork approved, the project now moves to the design phase. These plans will be presented at a public meeting to be held at a later date. Lakeshore Road West from Great Lakes Boulevard to Mississaga Street is also preparing to undergo $4.3 million worth of upgrading with the Community Services Committee expected to hear more on this issue later this year. Town staff had been expecting to begin construction on this more easterly section of Lakeshore Road West at a later date, but thanks to $3.8 million from the Municipal Infrastructure Investment Initiative, construction is now expected to begin in 2009. Construction on the section of Lakeshore Road West between Burloak Drive and Great Lakes Boulevard is expected to begin in early July. CABINET REFACING AFTER New Patients Welcome!
