On Sunday, May 25, the SSO's Halton and Peel Chapter will hold its annual Walk of Hope at Coronation Park. Mayor Rob Burton has proclaimed the day Hope for Schizophrenia Day. It was awareness Jefferies, who founded the SSO in Oakville, set out to achieve. After a 30-year teaching career, he hoped to change the world's awareness of the illness, and started by placing a small ad in an Oakville newspaper asking families of people with schizophrenia to attend a meeting to "share and educate." About 80 people attended the meeting in a local church basement. At that time, families were often blamed for the illness of their family member. Oakville became the first chapter of what has grown to be the Schizophrenia Society of Ontario, the Schizophrenia Society of Canada and the World Fellowship for Schizophrenia and Allied Disorders.
