W.H. Morden students Scott Cameron and Alan Stagg, spent approximately 80 hours working on their project. They created pykrete -- a mixture of sawdust and water -- and then formed a series of tests to compare its strength with ice. "We did a buoyancy test, a melt test --to see how fast pykrete melts compared to ice -- and a drop test to see whether it is stronger than ice," explained Cameron. The two Grade 8 students' melt-and-drop tests found that pykrete is stronger than ice, however, the results for their buoyancy test were inconclusive. This was the students' first science fair, ever. "We started with the science fair at Morden. A representative from the Bay Area science fair came, and we were chosen to go to the Bay Area science fair. We won there, and so we went to Ottawa, and won there also," Stagg explained.
