This summer kids can join our TD Summer Reading Club. Its theme is Laugh Out Loud @ your library this summer. Last year, more than 4,200 children experienced nearly 30,000 books. Starting on Friday, June 27 (or any day thereafter), children can visit their local library branch to register, pick up their log book to record the books they read and let the summer nonsense begin. Children need to return to the library three times between July 7 and Aug. 18 to report on their reading and receive prizes. This program is supported by the Friends of the Oakville Public Library and YMCA of Oakville who provide incentive prizes. There will be a special party at each branch the week of Aug. 18 to celebrate. It will be attended by Madame Buskerfly, a Canadian family and children's entertainer who performs juggling, stilt walking, magic and more. The library has offered the club for 27 years as a simple, recreational way to foster the joy of reading and at the same time reward their individual achievements. Reading is fun and can be a wonderful shared experience and there is no age limit. Parents can take part too, by reading to their children and even playing audio books or books on CD during car rides. We are also looking for enthusiastic student volunteers aged 14 to 17 for the summer reading program. We need girls and boys who will encourage children to read and participate in the Summer Reading Program, assist with drop-in activities and games, and gain great experience. We require volunteers for all five branches from June through August. Shift work is required and you are flexible during the week and on weekends.
