NO TAX MILTON -- The Notre Dame Fighting Irish put together a strong second half on the way to a 3-0 win over Iroquois Ridge in the Halton high school junior girls' championship game yesterday (Thursday). Despite trailing 1-0 at the half, Iroquois Ridge held its own and gave the undefeated Irish something to think about at halftime. Dino Borchetta, co-coach at Notre Dame along with Andrea Martin, kept the message simple at the break. "I just told them we have 35 minutes left together and to play the game like it's 0-0," said Borchetta. "It's a good way to go out." He and Martin are both moving to the new Burlington high school, Corpus Christi, in the fall. Ashley Donnelly was involved in all three Notre Dame goals, scoring the first and last and assisting on the second. The important insurance goal came midway through the second half, when Alyssa Cutaia headed in a pass from Donnelly after an Adrienne Harrison penalty kick. It was that penalty call and a couple of others that had Iroquois Ridge coach Emily Oliver biting her tongue. She was already coaching a team that was riddled with injuries. "That's not an excuse, though," she said after the game. "I think we dominated most of the first half. Just some unlucky calls (in the second half) changed the pace and momentum of the game, unfortunately. The girls pushed the whole way. That's all you can ask for." Donnelly opened the scoring with a low, hard shot in the first minute of the game and her second goal came late when she broke into the clear, ripped a shot off the crossbar and punched in the rebound. Irish captain Michelle Sankey said the offensive thrust after halftime was important. "We said we had to stay strong because anything can happen in the second half (of a one-goal game)," she said. Iroquois Ridge, 6-1-1 heading into the game, handed Holy Trinity its only loss of the season in semifinal play, while Notre Dame was eliminating Loyola. Oliver had praise for many of her players, including substitute netminder Danya Tobin, who has played the position the last half of the season. OT out of medal hunt at rugby OFSAA An 18-16 loss to Malvern in their opening game Wednesday was enough to relegate the Oakville Trafalgar Red Devils to the consolation round at the provincial AAA/AAAA high school boys' rugby championships in Oshawa. OT rebounded yesterday (Thursday) to down Markham 17-5 and earn a spot in the consolation semifinals, where it was slated to meet Hillcrest yesterday (game began after press deadlines). If victorious, OT would play in the consolation final today against either Brantford or Eastdale. The OT girls, meanwhile, won their first game at the AAA/AAAA tournament in Ottawa before dropping their second contest and being eliminated from medal contention. OT defeated Saltfleet 12-0 and fell 5-3 to Barrie Central. The Red Devils then blanked Birchmount Park 19-0 in a friendly contest. 2000 Appleby Line (Millcroft Shopping Centre) Burlington 2379 Trafalgar Road (Winners Plaza) Trafalgar Ridge Plaza, Oakville 905-315-7800 905-257-5006 w w w. t h e s u n d a n c e s p a s t o r e . c o m OPEN HOUSE SAT & SUN 2-4 173 POPLAR OPEN HOUSE SAT & SUN 2-4 OPEN HOUSE SUNDAY 2-4 2265 WOODMONT CRES $319,500 PRIME OLD OAKVILLE - GORGEOUS RENOVATED BUNGALOW ON 115' TREED LOT Gorgeous architect redesign.
