www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday June 20, 2008 - 9 Director upset by online petition Continued from page 7 Central and Brantwood schools would be closed by September 2010. This plan would feature Clearview Public School with a JK-8 English stream, EJ James Public School with a JK-8 English stream and Maple Grove Public School with a Grade 1-8 French immersion stream. Advantages listed in the report for the alternate option included: · consistency of programming through JK-8; · a centralized location for the French Immersion program; · three quality schools on appropriately sized sites; · geographic balance; · opportunities for Town of Oakville partnerships with Clearview · revenue positive for the board. The challenges for this option, as noted in the report, included: · contrary to the recommended model of PARC (JK-6); · major relocation and construction at all three sites; · the earliest implementation would be September 2010 (Clearview Public School would not be open until September 2010 at the earliest); · less access to specialist teachers at the intermediate level. While the report points out that both options would be rev- enue positive for the board, it also makes it clear that the preferred option would be the most lucrative. Under the preferred option the board would need to complete more than $5 million worth of construction and renovations to add eight classrooms to Chisholm Public School ($1.6 million), eight classrooms and a gymnasium to Linbrook Public School ($3.1 million) and four classrooms at Maple Grove Public School ($800,000). However, by selling Brantwood and New Central schools, selling the Clearview land and by taking advantage of reduced class size associated government funding the board expects to receive $12.8 million, resulting in a gain of $7 million for the board. For the alternate option the payout is not quite as big. In this situation, the board would have to pay more than $15 million worth of construction and in resources needed for the schools. Maple Grove Public School would require $3.7 million for a new gymnasium, 10 more classrooms and two portables among other things. The construction of Clearview Public School is estimated to cost more than $10 million while EJ James Public School would need $1.28 million for six additional classrooms and two portables. Selling Brantwood, Linbrook, Chisholm and New Central schools, plus government funding received for creating smaller class sizes, is expected to fetch $17 million, resulting in a $2 million gain for the board. While trustees refrained from discussing the options Joudrie again voiced disappointment with some of the tactics being used by local groups to promote their agendas. Joudrie singled out postings on myoakville.org as a particular concern. "The website had an Internet petition as one of its facilities and someone or some group of people used trustees' names and officials' names, including my own, to register on the petition with some misleading information," said Joudrie. "When we became aware of that we notified the ISP (Internet Service Provider) and had them remove the erroneous information." While Joudrie later said that the comments attributed to him were so bizarre they were clearly meant as a joke, he also pointed out that no one should be using the names of trustees or school board officials without approval.
