Fond farewell for retiring principal By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF 340 Lakeshore Road East, Oakville 905.338.0388 / www.mformen.com Post Corners Public School said goodbye to retiring principal Trish Gordon on Monday during a ceremony of such size and splendor that only a reception for a visiting head of state could have rivaled it. Driven to the school in a convertible for the 9 a.m. ceremony, the Post Corners principal of seven years got a taste of what she was in for as the street leading to the school was lined with children and teachers holding signs that read `You Rock,' `We'll Miss You' and other short, but passionate statements. At the school hundreds of students cheered Gordon's arrival with one group hoisting a sign that read `Farewell Mrs. Gordon, Thanks for a Great Seven Years.' As Gordon made her way into the school, she was greeted by two rows of children each holding a single rose, which they offered to her as she passed. The moment was made all the more poignant by a piper, who played the bagpipes as Oakville's senior citizens turned out in droves at Town Hall on Tuesday to get some much needed answers from council concerning the cancellation of the community bus service and about what is being put in its place. Around 50 senior citizens attended this week's Community Services Committee meeting where they first listened to a presentation by Transit Services Director Barry Cole about why the community bus service is being removed. Cole noted that the community bus was initiated as a pilot project in 1991 to provide a regular, accessible transit service to seniors within the downtown area. The intention was to connect seniors with shopping, medical and recreational facilities. However, since 2004 the community bus program has experienced a decline in ridership of more than 34 per cent. Cole noted the subject of the community buses was brought up at the Town's 2008 budget process during which time it was decided that because of a decline in ridership the community buses would be incorporated into the existing bus service.
