www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday July 23, 2008 - 33 Longhorns rained out in Oshawa The Oakville Longhorns' game Saturday against the Oshawa Hawkeyes was postponed, due to poor field conditions. The Longhorns had arrived at Oshawa's Civic Field and were preparing for Saturday's contest when rain began to fall heavily about 90 minutes before scheduled kickoff. City of Oshawa officials later declared the field unplayable and canceled the game. According to Longhorns head coach Barry Emo, the Hawkeyes were required by the Northern Football Conference to have a backup field available. With the regular season scheduled to conclude this weekend, Emo said it is nearly impossible to schedule a make-up game, and is awaiting the NFC ruling. Oakville (2-2-1) will visit the North Bay Bulldogs this Saturday. SETTING SAIL: Oakville Yacht Squadron product Oskar Johansson (left) and partner Kevin Stittle are preparing to represent Canada in the Tornado sailing class at next month's Olympic Summer Games in China. The Oakville Yacht Squadron will hold a fundraising event for the duo tomorrow. Olympic sendoff for local sailor The Oakville Yacht Squadron will hold a fundraising event for club alumnus Oskar Johansson and partner Kevin Stittle tomorrow (Thursday) at the squadron's home base. The event, titled Oskar Night, is being held to raise money for the two sailors that will represent Canada in the Tornado class at next month's Olympic Summer Games in Beijing. Johansson and Stittle are currently ranked sixth in the International Sailing Federation ranking system. They finished second at the 2008 world championships and were North American champions the past two seasons. The duo is expected to contend for a medal in Beijing. Johansson began his competitive sailing career at age 14, when he raced Lasers out of the Oakville Yacht Squadron. He finished 15th at the 2004 Olympics, when he was partnered with John Curtis. Johansson teamed up with Stittle three years ago. Johansson is also a former Pan American Games gold medalist (Sunfish) and is a seven-time national champion in the Tornado class (2002-2008). Oskar Night will feature a silent auction, raffles and a live auction. Funds raised will go towards a set of sails for Johansson and Stittle's Olympic race boat. The evening will begin with a bar and BBQ at 8 p.m., to be followed by a presentation by Johansson and Stittles at 8:45 p.m. The festivities will take place at the Oakville Yacht Squadron, located at 97 Forsythe St. To make an item or prize donation, contact Leslie Frenke at 905-849-4653 or by e-mail at lfrenke@cogeco.ca PHOTO CONTEST WINNER Week 10 Photo by David Knott www.oakvillesoccer.ca The Oakville Beaver A Proud Sponsor of Oakville Soccer Club Buzz dealt early playoff exit When Stu Brown looks back at the 2008 junior B lacrosse season, he'll do so with mixed emotions. The Oakville Buzz's season ended sooner than Brown, the Buzz head coach, anticipated, as Oakville was eliminated from the Ontario Lacrosse Association playoffs last weekend. The Buzz fell 8-6 to the Mimico Mountaineers Friday in Mimico, losing the best-of-five Eastern Conference semifinal series in four games. After finishing 17-3 in regular-season play to earn the top seed in the East, the Buzz struggled to a five-game victory over Akwesasne in the opening round before falling to the division-rival Mountaineers. "I think it's nice we had a great regular season, but does anyone ever remember that?" Brown said. "Does anyone remember who lost the Super Bowl or Stanley Cup finals? Who really gives a (care) that we were 17-3. We went below .500 in the playoffs, and that's what I'll remember about the year. "I know that's not a real positive statement, but I don't coach to lose in the playoffs," he continued. "I have a lot of great memories, it was a great group of kids and it was a lot of fun. But your last memory of the year is losing a couple games in a row. I'm still not too happy about it." Brown pointed to his team's youth and lack of playoff experience as a major factor in the early ousting. "Experience, at the end of the day, is a huge part of the playoffs. I thought we could overcome it with talent, but I think (inexperience) is really what it was," he said. "The kids have to learn to dig a bit deeper in the playoffs." An injury to sniper Dylan Gilbert, who watched Friday's game with a cast on his arm, didn't help matters either. Alex Kruse, Robert Bentivegna, Joel Zalasky, Braden Gallant, Kevin Harper and Brad Gillies scored Friday for the Buzz, which led 3-1 after the first period but was outscored 5-1 in the second and gave up the final two goals of the game. Brown said almost the entire roster should be back for 2009, when he expects the Buzz will be the team to beat. -- Jon Kuiperij INVICTAS FOOTBALL WWW.HALTONINVICTAS.CA PLAY FOOTBALL PLAY OAKVILLE PLAY INVICTAS FALL OAKVILLE FOOTBALL FALL REP.
