4- The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday July 26, 2008 www.oakvillebeaver.com Town wants merchants to keep doors closed this summer For the fourth consecutive summer, the Town of Oakville is urging businesses in downtown Oakville, Kerr Street and Bronte Village areas to close their doors during business hours in the summer. It's part of the Town's Doors Closed campaign that's aimed at reducing energy consumption. Shops and restaurants that use air conditioning units are asked to save on electricity by keeping windows and doors closed during the hot summer days. "It is important that Oakville businesses get involved in reducing their energy use," said Suzanne Austin, Town of Oakville municipal energy conservation officer. "Customers are anxious to see places that they frequent taking a leadership role in energy conservation." The Doors Closed campaign is a province-wide initiative of the Conservation Council of Ontario, with dozens of participating municipalities. A representative from the Town's Environmental Policy Department will be visiting stores and restaurants to distribute posters and ask local businesses to support the campaign. Businesses that choose to participate will display a Doors Closed poster in their front window that reads "Please Come In ... Our door is closed to save energy." Last year, more than 180 businesses participated in the campaign and the number is expected to increase this summer. "Downtown Oakville is actively working with the Town of Oakville to encourage business owners to make small changes in the way they do business" said Joe Giraldi, Chair of the Downtown Oakville BIA. "The Downtown Oakville BIA supports the Town's green initiatives and we look forward to an increase in the number of downtown businesses participating in the Doors Closed program." For more information on the Doors Closed campaign and for a listing of participating stores, as well as other environmental initiatives the Town supports, visit www.oakville.ca. Residents interested in distributing posters to stores in their area should contact the Town at 905845-6601, ext. 3928. Emancipation Day Picnic Aug. 3 An Emancipation Day Family Picnic is being held downtown on Sunday, Aug. 3 from 1 to 4 p.m. The picnic has been a tradition in George's Square since the 1860s. African- Canadians visited Oakville from all over Ontario to celebrate their freedom in `Glory Land' by way of The Underground Railroad. Award-winning author, archaeologist, and historian Dr. Karolyn Smardz Frost will be available to sign copies of her new book, I've Got a Home in Glory Land: A Lost Tale of the Underground Railroad that day. The book received the Governor General's Award for Non-Fiction. There will also be celebrating with musical performances by Muhtadi's World Drummers and Steel Band.
