www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday August 22, 2008 - 13 Former shelter resident pledges support for Halton Women's Place A businesswoman who knows firsthand the realities of homelessness is supporting a local fundraiser to benefit Halton Women's Place -- and she's asking for your help. Each year, the North Halton Chapter 464 of the Southern Cruisers Riding Club (SCRC) holds a 220-kilometre ride around Halton and surrounding areas to raise money for the shelter. This year's ride will take place tomorrow, and is the finale to a number of club events to support Halton Women's Place. The ride is for members only, so Lia Grimanis, founder of the Up With Women foundation and sales executive at SAS Canada, has come up with a way to involve residents. She's created a special donation page on her foundation's website for the fundraising challenge. Until Monday, Sept. 15, all donations up to $2,500 received for the Halton Women's Centre Challenge will be personally matched by Grimanis. Dave "Crockett" Cameron, first officer of the local SCRC, said he's excited about the challenge. "As a family-oriented motorcycle riding club, we have great respect and admiration for the work done by organizations like Halton Women's Place," he said. "We're proud to have raised over $5,000 for the centre over the last two years, and we're excited to significantly exceed those numbers this year with Lia's help." Grimanis has a special interest in supporting the shelter, since she lived in a shelter 18 years ago as a youth fleeing an abusive home. "If it weren't for the shelter I stayed in, I don't know if I would be alive today," Grimanis said. "Halton Women's Place provides services and amenities that are vital to Halton and the surrounding communities." Halton Women's Place operates two emergency shelters -- one in Milton and one in Burlington -- for abused and/or homeless women and their children. It provides counseling services, plus therapeutic and recreational activities. "Unfortunately, domestic abuse is pervasive in every neighbourhood. Sometimes there are more women and children in need of shelter than there are beds," Grimanis said. Diane Beaulieu, executive director of Halton Women's Place, said the shelter is grateful for the support from the SCRC and Grimanis. "Our goal is to see each family who accesses our services establish a new life free from wife assault and the violence associated with it. This wouldn't be possible without the hard work of our dedicated partners," Beaulieu said. Up With Women is focused on funding programs centred around housing, safety and the economic empowerment of women. It also raises awareness about women and homelessness.
