But soon the girl's visits were replaced with phone calls, through which she asked for money from the family because she and her husband could not afford to pay the house bills. Like the visits, the phone calls stopped, and were replaced with letters that also talked about the young lady's need for money. Throughout this time, the young woman would look sicklier each day. "The young lady became to look sickly every time the family would see her. Finally the mother was like, `Okay, what's going on? Are you seeing a doctor? You don't look well,'" said Clemons "The young lady, `Oh no, I'm fine. Don't worry about me. I'm fine. I'm just a little bit tired,'" Clemons continued. Only several days after this encounter, the family received a phone call. On the other line, there was a little boy's voice. That little boy was Clemons' nephew. "This little kid began to whisper, `Can you please come and get my mom. I think something is wrong with her. I think she's sick and she needs to go to the hospital,'" recalled Clemons. `"My dad is here. He won't take her to the hospital. And I'm really scared.'" When the family came, and finally took the woman to the hospital, doctors found lesions all over her stomach. She had stomach cancer. "That young lady, was my sister, who was 37 years old. The husband was an abusive male, who stripped her of her pride, stripped her of her self worth, stripped her of her dignity," said Clemons, both strength and sadness creeping in her voice. "This young lady, my sister, 37 years old, two weeks later passed away. And she felt like she was alone because she didn't know who she could trust. She didn't know who she could talk to." That's why programs like Sexual Assault and Violence Intervention Services (SAVIS) are important, stressed Clemons. Mayor Rob Burton, who attended the event, agreed. "The 18 years of marching that we've done is clearly worth keeping doing because Oakville and Burlington and the rest of Halton are now the safest communities in the entire community," he said, adding how dear the work that SAVIS is to his family because 30 years ago, his wife, while pregnant with their first child, was sexually assaulted. In 2007-2008 SAVIS made 3,955 contacts, responded to 411 crises calls, and delivered 809 individual counseling sessions for survivors of sexual violence in the Halton region. Since 1987 the group has been committed to providing "free, confidential and non-judgmental 24-hour support to all survivors of sexual violence." "The entire thing (Take Back the Night) has great meaning to my family," said Burton. "It's time for us not just as women, but as men to speak out," said Clemons. The 70 people, who marched Aug. 21 at dusk, were ready to speak out, and fight for freedom of movement.
