The meeting was adjourned just one hour after it began. The verbal fireworks occurred on Wednesday evening during the board's first regular public meeting of the new school year. The meeting is expected to continue at a special board meeting next Wednesday (Sept. 10). Halton Hills trustee and board chair Gillian Tuck Kutarna, herself a lawyer, gave Liz Pillon several verbal warnings not to speak out of turn as the latter tried to ask a question of clarification related to the board's discussion that night of student busing issues in southeast Oakville. Pillon, a litigation partner with the legal firm of Stikeman Elliott in Toronto, was warned several times by Tuck Kutarna, prior to the adjournment, not to speak to the board when she wasn't being addressed. The board chair ordered a fiveminute recess just before the adjournment, after the first time Pillon stood in front of the public gallery, packed with vocal Oakville parents, and tried to ask the board a question. Pillon insisted her question needed to be asked immediately because she feared the board might make a decision about busing in southeast Oakville prior to the public question period, which wasn't for another 45 minutes.
