www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday September 19, 2008 - 35 Lily Tomlin to bring lots of laughs to Oakville By Tina Depko OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Lily Tomlin has done it all -- television, theatre, movies and animation. Through a career that has spanned more than four decades, the American comedian has amassed fame, money and a boatload of awards, including Emmys and even a Tony. She started in television, and is still making waves, with guest appearances on hit shows. Just last week, she was slated to film an episode with the ladies of Desperate Housewives. Despite her success, her true love is being on stage, performing comedy. Tomlin still does about 40 to 50 live shows across North America each year. She's taking the stage of the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts on Sept. 27, with performances at 6:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. "I've never stopped doing concerts and live performances since I became wellknown on Laugh-In back in 1970," said Tomlin during a telephone interview from her Los Angeles home. "I always kept my hand in it by playing different cities." While some comedians hate road life, Tomlin said she enjoys it. She adds that she isn't picky about where she performs, with shows in major metropolitan centres like Toronto and Montreal, as well as sparselypopulated towns in provinces such as Saskatchewan and Manitoba. "I play a lot of places in Canada, since there's so many places there," she said. "You name it, I've probably played there." As a girl raised in Detroit, she said she sees little difference between Canada and the United States when it comes to geography. "I'm sure you all think it is different, but I don't think it is," she said. "I used to go to Point Pelee all the time, so I practically grew up in Canada." Tomlin describes her one-woman show as a funny evening out, where she steps into different character roles and cracks jokes about what's in the news. She said she often turns to local media to prepare some region-specific jokes, as well as touching on other topics. "I bill the show as A Classic Evening with Lily Tomlin, and I do lots of characters and it is pretty informal," said Tomlin. "I mostly try to be funny and informative at the same time. I usually also do a Q & A to have more contact with the audience." The U.S. presidential election has given her a wealth of material. She said she is rooting for Barack Obama, but is unsure if Americans will elect him. "We (Canada and the U.S.) are so close to each other and we're not right in so many areas, we're too bullyish, so that's why I'm supporting Obama," she said. "I certainly hope we get that change in our government." Tomlin said it is usually an older crowd that comes out to her shows. "I've got fans from a long time ago and through the years, people introduce their kids to me," she said. "If they were kids when I started out, I had so many different characters, that when they had kids, they would introduce them to the new characters. I've been lucky enough to have a big cross-section of fans." While Tomlin has a role in the soon-tobe-released Pink Panther II, and is in the midst of working out the details for another film, her other passion is Live In Concert activism. She has become involved in advocating that elephants be released from Lily Tomlin 22 nd See Activism page 38 HAMILTON PLACE 8PM TICKETS AVAILABLE AT THE COPPS COLISEUM BOX OFFICE, TICKETMASTER.CA OR CALL 905-527-7666 Poetry Café at new venue for this weekend's meeting The Poetry Café is meeting at a different venue this month.
