By Melanie Cummings SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER Urban adventurers are needed to apply for the upcoming Amazing Pace. A scavenger hunt through downtown Oakville on Saturday, Oct. 25 will be a local spin on the globe-trotting reality show competition. In this homespun version, teams of four explorers traverse on foot across 5.5 kilometres in and out of shops and local landmarks to untangle a set of clues. Along the way, mental problem-solving chores and physical tasks, such as returning a serve from a tennis pro, must be fulfilled. Cross the finish line in the fastest time to be declared the winner and head home with some great prizes. The Lung Association is the true victor of this fundraising event as well as children like Katie and Andrew Hardman, age 7 and 9 respectively, who both have asthma. Their mom, Alison is the behind-the-scenes organizer of the Amazing Pace. The youngsters are among 2.75 million people across the province that struggle to breathe. Asthma is the leading cause of hospitalization and the leading cause of missed school days among Ontario students. "It's a scary disease. We can live without food and water for days, but only minutes without air," said Hardman. Hardman has learned how to help keep her children's symptoms under control since they were diagnosed before age two. She keeps colds at bay with constant reminders to wash hands, steers clear of triggers and if congestion does somehow take a grip, Hardman keeps her kids at home so they don't infect others and to also give them a better opportunity to heal quickly. Between doctor visits Hardman relies on the Lung Association's Asthma Helpline (1800-668-7682) for knowledgeable advice from professional respiratory nurses. Others with chronic pulmonary disease call the Lung Association's Breathworks Helpline: 1-866-717-COPD (2673). To join the Amazing Pace, each participant pays a $25 registration fee and is required to gather a minimum of $100 in pledges. The registration fee includes a bag of goodies, breakfast supplied by Whole Foods Markets and a final checkpoint celebration with finger food and refreshments. Door prizes and rewards are given to the winning team, top fundraiser and pledge-generating team. The race will begin at Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts on Navy Street. Registration begins at 10:30 a.m. and the race sets off from the start line at noon. It takes typically about 90 minutes to two hours to complete, said Hardman. The goal is to raise $20,000 to fund respiratory research, promote better management of asthma, helps those with chronic lung disease, advocate a tobacco-free society and addresses the effects of air quality on lung health, said Hardman. So far 10 teams have registered and there's room for 10 more. The land in question is 10 acres in size and consists of Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH), a four-storey parking structure and an office building, currently used by HHS staff. A further six acres of adjacent land has also been factored into this consideration. Two acres of this land is used by the long-term care facility Wyndham Manor. The remaining four acres hold a staff parking lot and the former Oakville Trafalgar High School. "One of the most common and anticipated questions regarding the new Oakville hospital is what will happen to the current hospital and adjacent high school properties," said John Oliver, HHS President and CEO. "We realize the importance of the future use of these lands and are commit- ted to an open process that includes extensive community consultation." As part of the Town's Official Plan, a Residential and Employment Opportunities study will be undertaken to guide future development within all of the Town's stable areas, including the subject lands.
