Klezmer band coming to town Zebrina to play at local synagogue Shaarei-Beth El congregation is bringing Klezmer band Zebrina to Oakville on Sunday, Nov. 23 at 7:30 p.m. to its synagogue at 186 Morrison Rd. Klezmer is a musical tradition developed in the 15th century by Jewish musicians called klezmorim. They draw on prayer traditions extending back into Biblical times, and their musical legacy of klezmer continues to evolve today. The repertoire is largely dance songs for weddings and other celebrations. Due to the lineage of this music, the lyrics, terminology and song titles are typically in Yiddish. It was not until the mid-to-late 20th century that the word was used to identify a musical genre. This new band, Zebrina, led by Jonathan Feldman, is picking up where history left off, writing new jazz-infused Klezmer music. Feldman is accompanied by some of the best musicians Toronto has to offer, with clarinetist Mike Anklewicz (from KlezFactor), bassist Bret Higgins (from The Outlanders), and drummer Colin Kingsmore (from the Elizabeth Sheppard Trio). The band has recently been joined by a special guest, electric guitarist Joel Schwartz (from The Outlanders). Talented kids needed for contest Glenburnie School is presenting the Performing Arts Challenge Talent Contest on Saturday, Nov. 22 from 9 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. Children from five to 13 years of age from all over the region are invited to compete in this annual event. Instrumentalists, vocalists and variety performers from diverse genres and backgrounds will be competing for first place. The vocal division will run from 9 to 11 a.m. and the instrumental, dance, and variety divisions will follow from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Trophies will be awarded to the winners of each division. The Performing Arts Challenge Talent Contest is distinct from other talent competitions as it focuses on the complete artist. Attributes such as stage presence, appropriate dress, and command of the audience will all be taken into consideration by the panel of expert judges.
